Culture Exchanges Through the Silk Road
From June 25–28, 2026, the “Millennia-Old Silk Road, Dunhuang for Humanity: Global Integration and Promotion of Dunhuang Culture” initiative, together with the “Discover Chinese Civilization: Global Dialogue on Dunhuang Culture” program, was held in Ottawa and Toronto, introducing Canadian audiences to the art, history, and cultural heritage of Dunhuang.
Located at a historic crossroads between East and West, Dunhuang was one of the most important cultural hubs along the ancient Silk Road. For more than two millennia, it served as a meeting place where traders, travelers, artists, and scholars from different civilizations exchanged goods, ideas, religions, and artistic traditions. The renowned Mogao Caves, with their magnificent murals, sculptures, and manuscripts, preserve a remarkable record of this cultural exchange and stand today as a symbol of humanity’s shared heritage.

Supported by Gansu Province, the program was jointly organized by the Dunhuang Academy, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Canada, the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto, China World Affairs Press, City of Dunhuang, Gansu Performing Arts Group Co., Ltd., and the Canada-China Cultural Development Association (CCCDA). The 180 Arts Centre in Toronto and the Toronto Chinese Music Academy served as co-organizers.
Under the theme “Dunhuang on the Silk Road,” the program combined exhibitions, lectures, performances, educational activities, digital experiences, and multimedia presentations to highlight Dunhuang’s artistic legacy and the Silk Road’s role in cultural exchange.
Ottawa Program
On June 25, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Canada hosted a special Dunhuang cultural program in Ottawa for representatives from government, academia, and the cultural sector. The event was presented both in person and via global livestream.
Under the theme “Dunhuang on the Silk Road,” the program combined exhibitions, lectures, performances, educational activities, digital experiences, and multimedia presentations to highlight Dunhuang’s artistic legacy and the Silk Road’s role in cultural exchange.
Ottawa Program
On June 25, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Canada hosted a special Dunhuang cultural program in Ottawa for representatives from government, academia, and the cultural sector. The event was presented both in person and via global livestream.
The exhibition featured four sections showcasing Dunhuang’s cultural heritage through restored relics, high-resolution digital images of the Mogao Caves, Maijishan Grottoes, Yulin Grottoes, and other Silk Road sites, immersive VR experiences, documentary films on digital preservation, and interactive activities that introduced visitors to the stories behind the murals.
A featured performance, Melodies of Dunhuang: Resonance of a Flourishing Age, combined reconstructed ancient music, dance, poetry, and visual art. Performed on recreated instruments depicted in Dunhuang murals—including the pipa, lotus ruan, bili, and panpipes—the production reflected the musical and cultural exchanges that flourished along the Silk Road.
The academic program included the “Global Dialogue on Dunhuang Culture” lecture, presented by Dr. Stephen H. West, Research Fellow of the Dunhuang Academy. His talk, “Dunhuang and the Silk Road: A Shared Cultural Heritage Across Civilizations,” explored Silk Road history, Dunhuang art, digital preservation, and the international promotion of cultural heritage. The lecture featured multilingual simultaneous interpretation and was livestreamed worldwide. Participants also received multilingual publications featuring research, high-resolution grotto images, and the cultural landscape of Dunhuang.

Several Members of Parliament, provincial legislators, and municipal councillors sent congratulatory messages in support of the exhibition.

The program combined music reconstructed from historical sources with dance inspired by the Dunhuang murals, offering audiences an introduction to Dunhuang’s artistic traditions.
