70 Years of Excellence, An Enduring Legacy
The China National Symphony Orchestra traces its roots to the Central Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1956. It is one of China’s most prestigious national performing arts institutions and was among the earliest to establish a professional composition team, commissioning and premiering a remarkable body of original Chinese works.
1956–2026: Seventy years of uninterrupted music, and a legacy passed from one generation to the next.
For seven decades, the orchestra has remained at the forefront of China’s symphonic music scene. With outstanding artistic excellence and an open, inclusive cultural vision, it has become an important ambassador for Chinese music and culture on the world stage.
As one of China’s most internationally influential symphony orchestras, the China National Symphony Orchestra marks its 70th anniversary with a special Canadian tour supported by the National Arts Fund of China.
Its outstanding Chamber Orchestra travels to Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal, creating a musical dialogue that transcends time, distance, language, and borders.

East Meets West: Classics That Resonate Deep Within
From Romantic-era masterpieces to contemporary works, and from Western classical repertoire to traditional Chinese music, the Chamber Orchestra of the CNSO brings together diverse musical traditions in a vibrant dialogue between East and West.
This tour continues the ensemble’s tradition of presenting Chinese and Western repertoire side by side, with a carefully crafted program designed to showcase both the richness of the music and the ensemble’s exceptional artistry.
The first half features beloved Western classics, including the elegance and timeless beauty of Grieg’s Holberg Suiteand the lyrical warmth and emotional depth of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings in C Major. Together, these works highlight the ensemble’s distinctive sound, technical precision, and expressive range.
The second half turns to the rich musical traditions of China, featuring beloved works such as The Dance of the Golden Snake, The Butterfly Lovers, and Yao Dance.
Renowned CNSO composers Yang Fan, Huang Kairan, Li Shaosheng, and Wang Hua’an have been specially invited to create new arrangements of these works for chamber ensemble. The program also features Yang Fan’s original composition Qipao.
Through meticulous refinement and innovative reconstruction, these arrangements explore the depth and beauty of traditional Chinese culture through the intimate and sophisticated language of chamber music.

The 2026 Canada Tour coincides with China’s Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the country’s most cherished traditional celebrations.
To mark the occasion, the ensemble has specially prepared a three-piece program, Three Songs of the Moon, featuring Asi Dancing Under the Moon, Chasing the Moon, and A Full Moon in a Garden.
Through these melodies, the musicians express longing for home and send warm Mid-Autumn greetings to Chinese communities living abroad, conveying the timeless message of reunion and togetherness.
The tour is also one of the Canadian events under “The Same Moon, Wherever We Are,” a global Mid-Autumn cultural initiative promoted by China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
The Canadian tour is presented by the Canada-China Cultural Development Association (CCCDA), with the Bank of China (Canada) as a supporting sponsor.
More than a high-level cross-cultural musical celebration, this tour is an opportunity for people from different cultural backgrounds to connect through the universal language of music.
